Is your child bright? Does he or she love math and do well in it, but hate to read? When forced to read, does he or she struggle, make careless mistakes and then quit reading?
If this sounds like your child, he or she may have 20/20 eyesight, with or without eyeglasses, but poor vision. Eyesight is merely the basic ability so see; while vsion is the ability to identify, interpret, comprehend and act on what is seen. Eye exams conducted by most eye doctors, schools, or pediatric offices measure eyesight but ignore eight out of the nine visual ability categories necessary for your child to achieve his or her full potential in school.
Eighty percent of everything a child learns is acquired through his or her visual system. According to the American Optometric Association, about sixteen percent of all children suffer from inadequate visual skills and up to ninety-four percent of children with reading problems have reduced visual skills.
In general, vision efficiency problems surface when the child is reading to learn; visual perceptual problems can be present when the child is learning to read.
